Understanding Martial Arts For Kids
The ancient way of fighting, or what we call martial arts, was developed in the primeval age as a way to teach monks and soldiers the strategic method of fighting in times of war. As years passed, it has evolved into a full-contact sports and presentation that has become highly useful and entertaining at the same time.
Many people, not just the young ones, are very interested in learning the different martial arts skills. Many believe that teaching martial arts to children is simply teaching them how to defend themselves with bare hands or with the use of weapons. This is correct, but martial arts for kids is not just about fighting. It’s also about acquiring a healthy and conditioned body. Children of martial arts will learn good mind exercises as well as lessons that will enhance their psychological and emotional capacities. These children will learn the finer arts of discipline and control.
With the advent of technology and its many distractions, parents have forgotten the values that children can learn from the strict discipline and exercises that early warriors learn their entire lives. Martial arts for kids is a good way to teach children the value of discipline and teach them to be obedient and reverent to other people.
Making children participate in martial arts disciplines like Karate, Kung Fu and Taekwondo will offer many opportunies for these children to realize their full potential. It is an excellent way to aid them develop their physical and mental prowess. Martial arts for kids grant children important skills to become physically powerful and resolute while having fun.
Children as young as four years old can already be taught the basics of martial arts. As they grow older, it is good to properly help along the developmentof their talents and personalities. Many countries in East Asia, like Korea, make their young children learn Taekwondo as they begin their academic studies, some even before they start schooling. These kids will end up with more controlled motor skills and a more graceful and coordinated body.
Parents though, must remember that martial art is still a form of fighting for protection. Children without proper supervision can end up hurting each other especially if they are learning from untrained instructors.
As children are still tender in mind and body, they should have their parents find them a good teacher who will guide them in the proper manner. In Jackie Chan’s movie Karate Kid for example, the teacher who infuse violence into his students leads the children to be prideful and aggressive in the end. But, if the kid is taught the power of martial arts and its sanctity, he learns to respect and use the knowledge with a good heart.
The way children learn and apply the lessons can be greatly improved with the help of the parents. As with other sports, martial arts can be a way for children to have healthy activities. With the learned skills they can also take part in competitions. But more importantly, it can be a way for them to obtain healthy physical conditions and sound mind.
